About The Lillian School

The Lillian School is named after the founder of the Maharashtra Fellowship for Deaf, Lillian Ruth Doerksen (1921-2008). Popularly known as ‘Prakash Moushi - The Auntie of Light’, Lillian spent more than 50 years in India as a missionary educator. She spent most of her time at the Pandita Ramabai Mukti Mission in Kedgaon, where she educated and raised a family of 34 girls. Most of the girls today, are married, and well-settled in India and abroad. A couple of her daughters from Mukti Mission gave birth to deaf children. This saddened Lillian a lot. Furthermore, she found out that there were close to 9,00,000 deaf persons in the state of Maharashtra alone. Lillian was moved by this fact and started the Maharashtra Fellowship for Deaf in the year 1987. Today, MFD has 4 premises run by Mr. Arvind Meshramkar and Mrs. Tara Meshramkar. MFD is home to hundreds of deaf boys and girls, who are given shelter, education and are taught important life skills.
